“DON’T LET THE TRUTH GET IN THE WAY OF A GOOD STORY” – WENDY BLANCHARD, M.S., CHHC

“Don’t let the truth get in the way of a good story.” – Unknown

What is the story that you tell yourself? What is the emotional payoff for you?

We may convince ourselves of a storyline in our mind for a variety of reasons. I believe that the number one reason we convince ourselves to run with our “storyline” is because uncertainty and silence are too scary and too painful, and causes us anxiety.

It is, however, the most unproductive choice as we are not basing our “storyline” on facts…we are basing it on a fear based reaction to uncertainty, silence, and anxiety.

As I’ve shared with a man whom I love and adore recently, “If I have learned one thing, it is that if I have a question about something that matters to me, I NEVER accuse someone based on my thoughts or assumptions…I have a dialogue and ask directly.”

We must never take heart to the ego which is lead by fear. Having a dialogue and asking for the answers we are seeking guarantees us of the truth, whether we consider it good or bad.  Having a dialogue alleviates any potential of hurt feelings of others, and of putting ourselves into a story that is purely fiction where we begin to internalize and believe it, which causes us anxiety, sadness, and offers us no value, truth, or resolution.

I believe that one of our greatest gifts in any relationship is the gift of time, of authentic dialogue, and of loving and mindful negotiation. This will always be a meeting of the minds that both people can be excited about.

It is an ongoing process of learning, growing, and evolving through communication, and unconditional love.

Love and blessings,

Wendy
