EXCERPT – WRITE PRAY RECOVER:A JOURNEY TO WELLNESS THROUGH SPIRITUAL SOLUTIONS AND SELF CARE – WENDY BLANCHARD, M.S., CHHC, CPS

SHARING OUR STORIES GIVE US THE POWER TO HEAL, AND TO HEAL OTHERS.

AN EXCERPT FROM MY UPCOMING BOOK, “WRITE PRAY RECOVER:A JOURNEY TO WELLNESS THROUGH SPIRITUAL SOLUTIONS AND SELF CARE.”

“In a fleeting moment of clarity between self-medicating in early 2013, I made a decision to live, to make a monumental lifestyle change. I asked for help, and decided immediately to follow an alternative lifestyle, led by my most knowledgeable, caring, and compassionate holistic health practitioner, Lisa D’Alessandro, which would allow me to explore natural and organic solutions that would resonate with my individuality, my specific needs that would be healing for me, and that which are sustainable. Every day since, I have learned new and effective ways of healing on a cellular level through these natural and organic solutions.
In my active disease, I used to look forward to being at home by myself, in my own world that consumed me, full of sadness, depression, and addiction; it was my comfort zone. It was all I felt I could control at that time with everything else in my life so out of control. Toward the end of my active disease, I lived alone so I could remain sedentary. I watched television around the clock when I was awake, the same shows over and over again…all day. I stayed up all night, ate whatever I chose or didn’t eat at all, and just remained indoors in a world that I created in my mind. Here, in a false sense of safety exacerbated by the 2,000-plus pills a month I had been taking, is where my body, mind, and spirit existed.
Today, I am the healthiest I have ever been in my life. I live a holistic lifestyle that is natural and organic, which promotes whole healthiness: body, mind, and spirit. As I meet any new health challenges that may require a balance of a holistic health approach and a traditional health approach, my team of professionals and I work together to find a balance of treatment that will be of the highest benefit to me and offers sustainability.
As a Certified Holistic Health Counselor, I help others make lifestyle changes that offer them a chance to explore and implement new ways of healing, and the opportunity to sustain optimal health on a cellular level.
I truly understand all of the underlying symptoms of addictions: drugs, alcohol, food, television, video games, sex, shopping, gambling, etc. Admitting that I had an addiction was the first big step in healing. Next, I worked on peeling away the layers with a team of professionals that offered the type of holistic treatment that I was seeking, in addition to healthy self-care practices that would offer me, individually, what I needed in order to heal and to sustain wellness. In this way, I would be treating the whole person—physically, emotionally, spiritually, and socially. A holistic approach to recovery. I had to be willing to explore what the root problem was that kept me wanting to be in a mind-altered, numb state of being which profoundly affected my body, mind, and spirit.
In my active SUD, I was suffering from a disease that was keeping me lethargic and complacent, living in a deeply altered mindset, making it almost impossible for me to realize that I needed medical attention and support.
I did not have the presence of mind to comprehend just how gravely ill I was, and even thinking about asking for that help and beginning the work of recovery just seemed like it would be a monumental and insurmountable task. Not true. Where we put our energy, the energy expands. It makes perfect sense to place our energy into healing in whatever way that resonates with us, to understand and surrender to the fact that we cannot do this alone, and to humble ourselves in asking for help. That is exactly what I did on April 3, 2013.” – Wendy Blanchard, M.S., CHHC, CPS
