Something that I have learned in my recovery, and wish I had been given in my own childhood is that even when we are suffering in pain, we smile for the children watching our every move, our every expression, and listening to our every utterance. We want to teach them that even in adversity and challenge, we must keep moving forward, and that with love, support, and faith, we are resilient. It takes love, courage and determination to perform when we are in pain, but the show must go on.

Be a warrior for a child. I wish I had been able to offer this to my own children while they were growing up, and now that I know better, I do better. I am now leading by example so that it will reinforce the fact that they are never alone, that they are in charge of their reactions and responses, and that we all rise again even after facing the darkest times when we are loved. – Wendy Blanchard, M.S., CHHC
