SUICIDE IS NEVER AN OPTION – WENDY BLANCHARD, MS, CHHC, CPS

After learning of a death by suicide of my beloveds niece, I am reminded of how delicate the human condition can be. This beautiful young woman, wife and mom gone too soon.

This tragic news brings up so much for me as I recall the years that I struggled with suicidal thoughts and behaviors co occurring with Substance Use Disorder.

The bottom line is that it is imperative that we continue to have an ongoing dialogue to raise awareness on mental illness and suicide prevention. As we raise awareness, I am confident that more and more people will feel safe in stepping forward and asking for help for their symptoms of mental illness such as anxiety, depression or PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) that drive them to feel that their only option is suicide. We can offer tools and healthy practices through education, self care, treatment, and loving support.

Those that are living with a dual diagnosis such as mental illness and substance use disorder simultaneously, are at an even higher risk for attempted suicide or dying by suicide.

I am passionate about continuing my work in this field in raising awareness, eliminating  stigma, and to offer solutions to those asking for help. When I was living with this brain disease, I had no idea where to turn, I did not know who to trust, and I could not see any way out. Loved ones did not know how to help. I was alone and so unwell. By the grace of God, I asked for help to save my life after miraculously living through an overdose of prescription drugs where I continuously self medicated to numb the thoughts and emotions of trauma, severe depression and debilitating anxiety.

Suicide is NEVER an option. There are always solutions.

My journey has been a slow and steady recovery for the past 6 1/2 years, and I am thriving in recovery. I work hard every day through healthy practices, and offer my support to anyone who asks for assistance. It is an honor and privilege.
